BICO

Impact of socio-biological risk factors on infant development in low-income countries – foundations for a large-scale longitudinal population study in Malawi

Project Summary

This is a Birth Cohort (BICO) study aimed to identify infants at risk of poor developmental outcomes early in life by investigating how risk factors which operate in pregnancy and infancy impact on cognitive development. This will generate new population-based methods and a unique dataset for Malawi to identify infants with developmental delay, for whom we will provide advice on targeted and sustainable interventions, such as prolonged exclusive breastfeeding. this is a prospective, descriptive, in-depth study of infants born in ongoing clinical trials being conducted at TRUE in Southern Malawi. We use a mixed-methods approach, employing quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, to explore factors that impact on early child development.
